Prize Bridge Award Winner: Long Beach International Gateway Bridge

Structural steel provided a lightweight superstructure, offering an economical and innovative approach to seismic design for the bridge constructed to replace the former Gerald Desmond Bridge at the Port of Long Beach.

As California’s first-ever major cable-stayed bridge, the new bridge features towers and end bents designed to remain essentially elastic during seismic events. Winner of NSBA 2024 Major Span Merit Award, some 15% of all North American maritime container traffic crosses beneath, making the new Long Beach International Gateway Bridge a critical infrastructure link and a vital component of the regional and national economy.
