H. Louis Gurthet Teaching Faculty Award

The next nomination period for the 2027 Industry, Designer, and Educator Awards will open in mid-2026.
The H. Louis Gurthet Teaching Faculty Award, named for a past president of AISC, honors a teaching-focused faculty member whose primary responsibility at the university is teaching (e.g. professor of practice, lecturer, instructor, adjunct professor, etc.) within departments of Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Architecture, Construction Engineering, or Construction Management. The honoree, who has been teaching at the university level for 10 years or less, demonstrates excellence in classroom performance and effective connection of students to the steel industry.
The award recipient receives an honorarium of $2,500 and reimbursement of travel expenses to attend NASCC: The Steel Conference, during which the honoree will be recognized at the opening keynote.
Required nomination packet (maximum of 25 pages) includes:
- Nomination letters, including one from the department chair or dean (required) and other references (optional)
- Nominee's CV or brief biography
- Teaching portfolio compiled by the nominee; portfolio includes a statement of teaching philosophy, list of classes taught, sample syllabi, sample course notes/slides, evidence of outreach and advising of students, and other relevant items
